Red Envelopes - Julie's

I knew that this year (2012) Julie's placed a pack of three cute red envelopes inside a cream roll biscuit tin (to promote this product for Lunar New Year). I don't fancy much the cream roll biscuit, but I had to buy it in order to get these three cute red envelopes - it sounds stupid, isn't it? :)

the left red envelope represents "happiness", the middle one represents "wealth" and the right one represents "Luck"

I will be eating this cream roll biscuits every night for the next 1-2 months....... torturing.... :P

Actually, I have been collecting red envelopes of Lunar New Year (or known as red packets) for a couple of years. These red envelopes mostly come in free from commercial banks, companies, manufacturers, organisations etc. I shall be sharing with you here my little collection of red envelopes from time to time.

Dragon Has How Many Legs?

After knowing about different number of toes on dragon, then I counted the number of legs of dragon. Well, I think I am safe to say that dragon has four legs. However, when I looked at the angpau (red envelop; see the image below) of CIMB (bank) that I received during Lunar New Year a few days ago, I was totally shocked! The dragon depicted on the CIMB angpau has five legs! Well, I guess the dragon in the CIMB angpau should have six legs with one leg hidden by the long body of the dragon. Can you believe this?

Well, I am still in the mood of dragon....... :)

Dragon Has How Many Toes/Claws?

All this while I have never given a thought on this question - Dragon has how many toes/claws? I always take it for granted that dragon has five toes - typical human centric thinking :)

I found out today that dragon actually has different number of toes!!!! In general, Chinese dragon has five toes, Korean dragon has four toes and Japanese dragon has three toes. Well, the Chinese dragon has also got four toes and three toes. The 5-toe dragon is an imperial dragon, the 4-toe dragon is for high ranking officials, and the 3-toe dragon is for low ranking officials and public....

There were explanations why dragon never reached Western:

"The Chinese tradition states that dragons originated in China with five toes. As they travelled abroad they lost more toes the further they went from home. This is why Oriental dragons never reached the West - they would have run out of toes."

"The Japanese tradition has a similar story that differs in one important respect: dragons originated in Japan. In this version of the legend, dragons grew more toes as they travelled further from home. Once they reached five toes they found it difficult to walk which is why they never reached the West."

Among the many postal authorities issuing dragon stamps for this coming Lunar New Year, the dragon stamp from China is the most beautiful one. I've finally had this real dragon stamp in front of me.... what a master piece!

Too Hot to Handle......

I think year 2012 was started excellently for philately in Malaysia. The dragon miniature sheets (below image) issued on 12 January 2012 are so hot.... I mean really really hot. Stamp collectors in Malaysia have not seen for many years the enthusiasm of people (collectors and non-collectors) queuing up (very long queue) at post offices throughout the country to buy these miniature sheets. Many early birds went to post offices, but came back becoming angry birds as the miniature sheets were sold out early on the day of issue (within half an hour in some post offices).

The printing number for RM3 miniature sheet is 25,000 and RM5 miniature sheet is 20,000. At the GPO Kuala Lumpur, the RM3 miniature sheet has totally been sold out. However, there are still a few thousand of RM5 miniature sheet (at GPO Kuala Lumpur) to be sold later to SODA members ONLY. So, for those SODA members who are not able to buy the RM5 miniature sheet at the day of issue, they may order this RM5 miniature sheet by filling up special order form. Bear in mind also, there will be issue of annual book (for 2012) by Pos Malaysia later after completing all the stamp issues for year 2012, and the dragon miniatures should appear in the annual book. So, collectors are still able to get these dragon miniature sheets from Pos Malaysia much later.

Among the many countries issuing dragon stamps for year 2012, I personally think the dragon stamp from China is the most beautiful. The pair of dragon stamps (the two miniature sheets) of Malaysia is also one of the most beautiful ones, if it is not better than that of China.

I was learnt that Pos Malaysia has received many new application forms from collectors to become SODA members due to these dragon miniature sheets (these non-SODA members failed to get the miniature sheets on the day of issue). So, the philately of Malaysia started excellently for year 2012. I wish the dragon miniature sheets would bring some life to the dying hobby of stamp collecting in Malaysia.....

The below stamp of China was issued in 2003 to commemorate SARS. I bought it in 2003 at a price of RM1-RM2. I was shocked when I checked the price in eBay for this stamp - it is being sold roughly at RM140! I do not know what is the story behind this rocketing price.

2012 - The Legacy of Loom

Pos Malaysia released today (12 January 2012) its first stamp issue for year 2012. The topic of the stamp issue is "Legacy of the Loom" consisting a set of 5 stamps (in format of strip) with denomination 60s each, and two miniature sheets with denominations of RM3 and RM5. The miniature sheets contain an image of dragon, this seems to coincide the year of dragon. The miniature sheets are very hot items. I was learnt that the miniature sheets were sold out nationwide in the morning of the day of issue.

The Coming Issue

Pos Malaysia is going to release its first stamp issue for year 2012 on 12 January 2012. A set of five stamps with denomination 60s will be released, and this comes together with two miniature sheets, one with denomination RM3 and the other is RM5. I believe that the focus of this stamp issue is on the miniature sheets because both the miniature sheets depict dragon - it is no doubt the miniature sheets are issued to coincide the year of dragon. These miniature sheets would be hot items for collectors, and it is safe to assume that many collectors would buy extra copies.....

You guys should get ready for these miniature sheets!

Poll Results: Most Favourite Stamp Issues For 2011

Consecutively for the third year I put up a poll asking visitors to this blog to vote on their most favourite Malaysia stamp issues. After roughly two weeks of poll race for the 14 stamp issues for year 2011, 94 times of vote casting had been recorded. Visitors were asked to choose three most favourite stamp issues. However, I noted that not all vote casting followed strictly the instruction (some only chose one or two stamp issues instead of three). Nevertheless, my great appreciations go to those who had taken part in the poll. The result from the poll is shown in the graph below.

It looks like the Personalised Stamps and Virtues issues had a close race, both of them top the list having 44 and 43 votes respectively. This is closely followed by Royal Institutions issue with 39 votes. Post Boxes issue is also not doing badly by having 27 votes. The Children’s Pets (20 votes), Highland Tourist Spots (18 votes), Aviation in Malaysia (16 votes) and Smart Tunnel (17 votes) issues are doing moderately. Spices (14 votes), Palaces (13 votes), Artifacts (8 votes), Malaysia-Indonesia Joint Issue (6 votes) are not that palatable. Suzuki Cup (3 votes) and Visual Arts – II (2 votes) issues are placed at the bottom of the list.

I think the stamp issues in year 2011 are average good, however, not having one or two outstanding issues. It is clearly demonstrated by the best choices (Personalised Stamps and Virtues) not having more than 50% votes (50% of 94 votes is 47). Some voters complained stamp set is nice but not the miniature sheet or vice versa for some stamp issues. So, they were having difficult time to make their choices. As for myself, I had chosen Children's Pets, Post Boxes and Highland Tourist Spot.

Different people have different preferences. We all have chosen what we like, and we respect each other's preferences.

I assure you that a similar stamp poll for year 2012 will be conducted. Please do come back to cast your votes in December 2012!

The mail centre processes mail for the Selangor and Wilayah Persekutuan is located at Shah Alam. When the mail centre was introduced, the postmark from the mail centre bears the name NMC Shah Alam. I think the name NMC Shah Alam is being changed to Pusat Mel Nasional by stages since September 2011.

Pos Malaysia released the last stamp issue on 12 December 2011. The stamp set entitled Royal Institute contains three stamps with denominations 60s, 80s and 90s.

Registered Labels

I am not really into collecting registered labels of Malaysia. However, these registered labels are quite attractive. If not mistaken, there are altogether six types of registered labels in Malaysia. I show here only five types - red, blue, green, brown and yellow. The other one type I do not show here is a pink colour one. The red label is for domestic registered mail; the blue label is for international registered mail; the green label is for postal service registered mail; the brown label is for registered mail delivering traffic summons; and the yellow label is for domestic AR registered mail. On the other hand, the pink label (not shown here) is for international incoming registered mail.

Pos Malaysia gave away a set of six postcards for the purchase of the Smart Tunnel stamps in General Post Office KL. These postcards are quite attractive, and they are nice for making maxicards.

Coat of Arms - from North Borneo to Sabah

Before Sabah (together with Sarawak and Singapore) joining Malaya to form Malaysia in 1963, Sabah was known as North Borneo. North Borneo (British North Borneo Company) had its first coat of arms in 1881. This coat of arms of North Borneo/Sabah has been evolving since. The evolution of coat of arms for North Borneo/Sabah is well demonstrated in the stamps of North Borneo and Sabah.

This North Borneo stamp was issued in 1897. The coat of arms has a lion above the ship. The small flag on the top of the coat of arms has an image of lion as well. This coat of arms was created in 1881.

This North Borneo stamp was issued in 1956. The coat of arms is still the same as the one created in 1881.

This North Borneo stamp was issued in 1957. There are some major changes on the coat of arms. The ship in this coat of arms is different from that of 1881. The Mt. Kinabalu has been introduced to this coat of arms (absent in the 1881 coat of arms). Furthermore, the slogan "Pergo Et Perago" (meaning "I undertake and I achieve" in Latin) has also been introduced to this coat of arms. The edge of the coat of arms now becomes more simple.

This North Borneo stamp was issued in 1961. The coat of arms is similar to that of the above stamp (1957).

This Sabah stamp was issued in 1965. North Borneo has become Sabah after 1963. The coat of arms of Sabah adopts the coat of arms of North Borneo, but with some modifications. First the lion has been removed from the coat of arms (including the lion image on the flag in the coat of arms). The lion image has been replaced by 5 V-strips. Now the two hands holding the flag are not covered by long sleeves. The slogan has been changed to "Sabah Maju Jaya".

This Sabah stamp was issued in 1971. The coat of arms of this stamp is similar to that of the 1965 stamp above.

This Sabah stamp was issued in 1979. The coat of arms of this stamp is similar to those of 1965 and 1971 stamps above.

This Sabah stamp was issued in 1986. Sabah totally revamped the coat of arms in 1982. A kingfisher image has been adopted in this new coat of arms, this is to correspond with the coat of arms of Sarawak (hornbill image). This coat of arms was only in use from 1982 to 1988.

This Sabah stamp was issued in 2005. This stamp has a new coat of arms (totally different from the one used in 1982-1988). This new coat of arms resembles that of the period before 1982, but with some modifications. The ship has been removed from the coat of arms, and the Mt. Kinabalu has different shape. Another small change is that the 5 V-strips (before 1982) has become 3 V-strips.

RM5 Bird Definitive - Serial Number

How many serial numbers have been produced for the RM5 bird definitive reprint? Well, I think this has been the question for many collectors who are chasing serial numbers. Among the five bird definitive reprints (20s, 30s, 50s, RM1 and RM5), the RM5 reprint has the lowest number of serial number. This is fair enough because RM5 stamp is less commonly used stamp for postage, and therefore a batch of printing (one serial number) on reprint could last for a very long period.

The first serial number for RM5 bird reprint is 2007/1, though the bird definitive set was issued in 2005. The slow emergence of the RM5 bird reprint was due to the excessive RM5 fruit (banana) reprint in the stock.

Nevertheless, the next serial number for RM5 bird reprint recorded in post offices throughout the country was 2010/2 (the current serial number available in post offices). Many collectors were running around post offices looking for serial number 2010/1, but all ended up in vain. Collectors are still searching for serial number 2010/1 for RM5 bird reprint. I was just wondering if any of my blog readers have RM5 bird reprint with serial number 2010/1. I would be extremely happy if you could send me a scanned image of this mysterious serial number so that I could display here to make other readers (including me) drooling.... :)

Pos Malaysia released a stamp set on November 21, 2011 depicting the Smart Tunnel. This stamp set consists of six stamps with denomination 60s each and a miniature sheet. The miniature sheet contains two 3D-stamps with denominations RM2 and RM3. These stamps and miniature sheet were printed by Joh. Enschede Security Print in the Netherlands. These stamps and miniature sheet have fluorescent mark as that of Post Box stamps. The stamps have gum but the miniature sheet is self-adhesive.

The 30s stamp from this serial number (2011/2) is different from those of the previous two serial numbers (2010/1 and 2011/1). The difference is on the border of the stamp. The stamps from 2010/1 and 2011/1 have white border but the stamp from 2011/2 is without white border. So, the stamp from 2011/2 is a "new" stamp!

2003 - Beta Fishes

These beta fish stamp sheets are just gorgeous. The stamp set was released in 2003. This stamp set is one of the modern stamp sets containing enormous number of watermark and perforation varieties. I will talk about the watermark and perforation varieties of these stamps in another entry, hopefully.

Perforation and Watermark Varieties - Quails and Partridges 2001 - Revisit

I wrote some time ago about the challenging task on figuring out the number of varieties (watermark and perforation) for the stamp issue of Quials and Partridges released on January 22, 2001. You may click here to read the old entry. Until today, the number of varieties for these Quials and Partridges still remains uncertain. However, I am updating the varieties that I have in my collection. All this while, the watermark recorded for these stamps is SPM sideway down. However, someone told me that SPM sideway up watermark has been recorded for the denomination 30s. I am not sure how true is this information.

Postboxes - Fluorescent Mark

Stamps from Postbox issue (October 10, 2011) were printed by Joh. Enschede Security Print in the Netherlands. These stamps have fluorescent mark. The fluorescent mark of songket motif image is visible under ultra-violet light.

Garden Flower RM1 - 2011/2

The serial number for RM1 garden flower definitive now is 2011/2.

The RM1 stamp from this serial number (2011/2) is different from those of the previous two serial numbers (2010/1 and 2011/1). The difference is on the border of the stamp. The stamps from 2010/1 and 2011/1 have white border but the stamp from 2011/2 is without white border. So, the stamp from 2011/2 is a "new" stamp!

Pos Malaysia released new stamp sets on October 10, 2011. The stamp sets contain five stamps (denomination RM1 each) from sheetlet and five stamps (denomination 60 sen) from booklet.

2011 - Visual Arts II

Pos Malaysia released a set of three stamps on topic of Visual Arts on September 19, 2011. This is the second series of the visual art issue. The first series of Visual Arts stamps were released on August 28, 2008.

I saw the poster and banner of this Visual Arts issue in post offices a few days before the date of issue. The 60s stamp was quite appealing among the three stamps in the poster/banner. However, I was totally taken aback when I saw the real stamps on the date of issue. The 60s stamp is the ugliest one, and this might have been due to the over-dose of colour of the 60s stamp. Instead, I quite like the 90s stamp - simple and clean.

The garden flower definitive stamps (eight denominations) issued in 2010 has micro-printing as a security measurement. Each of these stamps has different wordings for the micro-printing. The micro-printing is confined to the creamy bottom portion and the edges of the stamps.
