Maximum Card - Stamp Fair 2025 at Putrajaya

This maximum card is realized by using a Fokasmega postcard with an overprint stamp from Stamp Fair 2025 at Putrajaya. The cancellation of the maximum card is done using the cachet of Stamp Fair 2025 at Putrajaya (17-18 April 2025).

FDC - Stamp Fair 2025 @ Putrajaya

On the occasion of Stamp Fair 2025 @ Putrajaya (17-18 April 2025; click here to read about the event), Pos Malaysia issued an overprint miniature sheet. Pos Malaysia had a sale booth at the location of the event. I made a FDC for the overprint miniature sheet at the event. Pos Malaysia provided two cachets - one cachet for the stamp fair and another cachet for FIAP Exco Meeting. FIAP Exco Meeting was held at the same location of the stamp fair on 18 April 2025. I stamped the FDC with both the cachets. I also went to the nearby post office (Pejabat Pos Putrajaya; about 5 km away from the location of the stamp fair) on the first day of the event (17 April 2025) to cancel the FDC.

Some notes:

Malaysia has 10 hornbill species (click here to see the hornbill species). Up to date, seven hornbill species have appeared on the stamps of Malaysia. They are Rhinoceros Hornbill, Great Hornbill, Helmeted Hornbill, White-crowned Hornbill, Plain-pouched Hornbill, Wrinkled Hornbill and Wreathed Hornbill (click here, here and here to see these hornbill stamps). However, there hornbill species has yet appeared on the stamps of Malaysia - Bushy-crested Hornbill, Oriental Pied Hornbill and Black Hornbill. I hope these three hornbill species will appear on the stamps of Malaysia in the near future.

Ten Hornbill Species of Malaysia

The latest issue (September 2013) of the magazine Malaysian Naturalist has beautiful illustrations of all the ten hornbill species occurring in Malaysia (see below images). It is really a pleasure to look at those beautiful hornbill illustrations. How I wish Pos Malaysia comes out with a stamp issue with ten stamps depicting the ten hornbill species in Malaysia, using illustration approach similar to that of Malaysian Naturalist (with plain background). I hope Pos Malaysia would not keep me dreaming...

The ten hornbill species occurring in Malaysia are rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros), helmeted hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil), great hornbill (Buceros bicornis), white-crowned hornbill (Aceros comatus), wrinkled hornbill (Aceros corrugatus), black hornbill (Anthracoceros malayanus), plain-pouched hornbill (Aceros subruficollis), oriental pied hornbill (Anthracoceros albirostris), bushy-crested hornbill (Anorrhinus galeritis) and wreathed hornbill (Aceros undulates). Hornbill Stamp from Indonesia

I just acquired this bird miniature sheet of Indonesia. The miniature sheet is an overprint one for Jakarta International Philatelic Expo 2009 (28 October - 1 November 2009). I like this miniature sheet because it has a hornbill stamp on it. The hornbill species depicted in the stamp is wrinkled hornbill (Aceros corrugatus). Wrinkled hornbill is distributed in Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. You may view the original hornbill stamp here.

Hornbill Stamps of Indonesia

Recently, I acquired three hornbill stamps of Indonesia. The hornbill species depicted in the stamps are wrinkled hornbill (Aceros corrugatus), helmeted hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil or Buceros vigil) knobbed hornbill (Aceros cassidix). Wrinkled hornbill and helmeted hornbill are distributed in Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo. Malaysia postal authority has issued hornbill stamps for these two species as well. On the other hand, knobbed hornbill is endemic to Sulawesi Island of Indonesia. (Click here to see other entries on hornbill stamps from this blog).


This wrinkled hornbill stamp is part of a miniature sheet containing six bird stamps. The miniature sheet was issued on July 15, 2009.

This helmeted hornbill stamp is part of a minisheet containing 11 stamps depicting flora and fauna of Indonesia. The minisheet was issued on November 5, 2008

This knobbed hornbill stamps is part of a 10 stamp set depicting flora and fuana of Indonesia. The stamp set was issued on November 5, 1996.

Hornbill Stamp - Sarawak

Borneo is the land of hornbill. In many occasions, hornbill images have appeared on stamps of North Borneo (Sabah). As a part of Borneo, Sarawak is not spared from issuing stamps of hornbill. The most depicted hornbill species on stamps of North Borneo (Sabah) and Sarawak is rhinoceros hornbill. Below is a stamp of Sarawak with an image of rhinoceros hornbill. The stamp was issued on October 1, 1957.

Overprint - China 2009

F.I.P stamp exhibition of 2009 was held in China (China 2009) on April 10-16, 2009. Pos Malaysia took part in the exhibition, and an overprint MS was released on the occasion. However, the MS was only available from selected post offices in Malaysia on April 20, 2009. The unique bird MS issued on January 12, 2009 was overprinted with China 2009 logo. The overprint MS also bears the country name. The original MS did not have the country name. Click here to view the original MS.

African Hornbills

I checked my stamp album, and I found these two beautiful postally used hornbill stamps of African countries. The stamp of Malawi depicts a silvery cheeked hornbill. This K2 stamp was issued on 25 July, 1988 as one of the 15 denominations of a set of definitive stamps. The second stamp is from Kenya depicting yellow billed hornbill. The 50s stamp was issued on 22 February, 1993 as one of the 11 denominations of a set of definitive stamps. The two hornbill species are confined to continent of Africa.

Thailand - Hornbills

Of many bird stamps, hornbill stamps are one of my favourite bird topics. Postal Authority of Thailand released a set of four stamps to commemorate the Hornbill Conference on April 12, 1996. These stamps show different species of hornbills namely white-crowned hornbill, rufous-necked hornbill, plain-pouched hornbill and rhinoceros hornbill. Three of the four hornbill species depicted in the stamps are found in Malaysia. The only hornbill species outside Malaysia territory is rufous-necked hornbill.

Malaysia 2009 - Unique Birds

Pos Malaysia released its first stamp issue for 2009 (unique birds) on January 21, 2009. Three stamps (one design for 30 sen two designs for 50 sen) and a miniature sheet (RM5) were issued. These stamps and miniature sheet are definately gorgeous, and they are the art work of Teh Yew Kiang. One thing which attracts my attention is the miniature sheet. Two species of hornbills are depicted in the miniature sheet - whrethed hornbill and plain-pouched hornbill. For the very first time, these two hornbill species are being depicted in stamps of Malaysia. The plain-pouched hornbill is particularly interesting because, for Malaysia, it has only been recorded in Royal Belum and Temenggor. The miniature sheet appears to have a major error - the word of Malaysia is not printed on the stamp area of the miniature sheet. The error seems to have violated the UPU rule. I have learnt that Pos Malaysia has withdrawn the sale of the minature sheet since February 3, 2009.

Hornbill Stamps - North Borneo

I flipped through my album and noted some hornbill stamps from North Borneo. I feel like displaying them in my blog. I wrote something on the hornbill stamps of Malaysia some time ago, and it is just good to add on these hornbill stamps in this entry to supplement the previous one because North Borneo is now known as Sabah, is part of Malaysia. All the three hornbill stamps shown below portray rhinoceros hornbill.

Hornbills of Malaysia

Hornbills are large beautiful birds taxonomically placed in the family Bucerotidae. They normally nest in hollow of tree trunk. In Malaysia, ten hornbill species have been recorded, i.e. rhinoceros hornbill (Buceros rhinoceros), helmeted hornbill (Rhinoplax vigil), great hornbill (Buceros bicornis), white-crowned hornbill (Aceros comatus), wrinkled hornbill (Aceros corrugatus), black hornbill (Anthracoceros malayanus), plain-pouched hornbill (Aceros subruficollis), oriental pied hornbill (Anthracoceros albirostris), bushy-crested hornbill (Anorrhinus galeritis) and wreathed hornbill (Aceros undulates). Pos Malaysia issued stamps with hornbill images on a few occasions. Among the ten hornbill species, rhinoceros hornbill is the most popular hornbill species depicted in Malaysian stamps. The other hornbill species which have been depicted in Malaysian stamps are great hornbill, helmeted hornbill, wrinkled hornbill and white-crowned hornbill.

One of the eight bird definitive stamps issued on 9 September 1965. The hornbill species on the stamp is rhinoceros hornbill. The male hornbill is feeding the female hornbill nesting in hollow of tree trunk.

One of the four beautiful hornbill stamps issued on 26 October1983. This is again a rhinoceros hornbill.

One of the stamps in a miniature sheet issued on 2 December 1996. The miniature sheet was overprinted with Hong Kong '97, and released on 12 February 1997. A pair of rhinoceros hornbills are shown on the stamp.

One of the four stamps to commemorate Visit Malaysia Year 2007. The stamps were released on 19 March 2007. The beautiful rhinoceros hornbill is on the left side of the stamps.

A pictorial aerogramme was released on 12 August 1996. The aerogramme bares a value 50c with an image of rhinoceros hornbill.

This miniature sheet was issued on 14 June 2004 depicting wildlife in Malaysia forest. The two rhinoceros hornbills are on the border of the miniature sheet.

This is one of the ten stamps released on 31 December 1999 to commemorate the new millennium. The hornbill species on the stamp is great hornbill.

Hornbill has been used as a symbol and identity. Sarawak state, famous of hornbill, uses rhinoceros hornbill as the state symbol, and the state emblem carries the hornbill image. The above stamp is one of the 14 stamps released on 25 September 2007.
