The Eight Immortals - China vs Taiwan vs Thailand

The Eight Immortals are legendary saints in Chinese mythology. You may click here to read more about the eight immortals. The most famous tale of these eight immortals is how they crossed the stormy East Sea. A few postal authorities have issued stamps to portray these eight immortals.

Taiwan stamps portraying the eight immortals. The top four stamps were released in 2003 and the bottom four stamps were released in 2004

What do you want?

Have you asked yourself what do you want in your life, or what are you looking for in your life? Oh..... I want happiness..... Oh, I want a lot of money..... Oh, I want a lot of love.... Oh, I want this and I want that..... Oh...........

Anyway, I quite like the stamp issue from Thailand released some time early of this year (April 23, 2010). The stamp set portrays three Chinese gods - one for happiness (right most), one for prosperity (middle) and one for longevity (left most).

Actually, Macau Post also released similar stamps much earlier (May 9, 1994).

Beautiful Stamps of Hong Kong

I've been writing on Malaysia philately for the past one week. Well, this entry is a bit of change - non-Malaysia philately. I'm showing you a cover from Hong Kong and some Hong Kong stamps. This cover is so simple and clear, and I just love it. I particularly love it because the cover is franked with a frog stamp cancelled with a clear handstamp of GPO Hong Kong dated on July 15, 2010. The frog stamp is part of the four-stamp set issued on July 15, 2010. Actually, I asked a Hong Kong friend to buy me this stamp set including the miniature sheet, and use the frog stamp on the cover when sending to me. I told him not to send me first day cover, because I dislike first day covers. The stamp set also contains a dragonfly stamp. Dragonfly stamps are also my favourite. In fact, I have been indulging myself most weekends on photographing dragonflies and damselflies. I own another blog on dragonflies/damselflies (click here to visit to the blog).

Stamp Design I

Sometimes we comment the stamp design on the stamps acquired by us. We want to feel good or contented to spend good money on good stamp design. One definitely feels bad and grumbles if the stamp design is not good, and it becomes worse if the denomination of the stamp is not low. Of course, different people have different opinions/tastes on stamp design. What is a good stamp design for one person is not neccessary good for the other persons. Well, beauty is always subjective.

Anyway, I particularly fancy the design of a Great Britain stamp set issued on June 23, 1998 to commemorate 50th Anniversary of National Health Service. The design inspires me alot in many ways. The design has the elements of simplicity, creativity and EMOTION. I feel warm by looking straight into the stamps - caring and love. Believe it or not, all these are acheived only by two hands! So, the morale of the story is you don't need complicated pictures/images to make a good stamp design...... hehehehehe

two hands forming a heart with the message "10,000 donors give blood everyday"

an adult hand clasping a child hand with the message "1,700,000 prescriptions dispensed everyday"

two hands form a cradle with the message "2,000 babies delivered every day"

taking pulse with the message "130,000 hospital outpatients seen everyday"

Currency Stamps of Singapore

The currency stamps of Malaysia released early of this year are just not appealing to eyes for some reason. I looked through my stamp album and I found this block-of-4 currency stamps of Singapre sitting at one corner of the album. These beautiful stamps were issued on October 2, 1992. They are so appealing eventhough the shape of the stamps is square (not round). To be honest, this set of Singapore currency stamps is actually one of my favourite stamp sets!

The first round shaped stamp of Malaysia is from the stamp set issued on May 15, 1971. The stamps were issued to commemorate the opening of new building of Bank Negara Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. The stamps were printed using photogravure approach by Harrison. These stamps are very nice indeed.

Irish Beautiful Dragonfly Stamps

I always fancy dragonfly stamps because I do research on dragonflies/damselflies. I discovered a new dragonfly species (Chalybeothemis chini) from Tasik Chini, Pahang two years ago. I have three more new damselfly species to be published this year.....

Well, I spotted these dragonfly stamps and miniature sheet of Ireland from internet a couple of months ago. They are just gorgeous, and I went to the Irish Post website to purchase online these stamps and miniature sheet. The stamp set was issued on October 16, 2009. One dragonfly (Libellula quadrimaculata) and three damselfly (Coenagrion lunulatum, Pyrrhosoma nymphula and Calopteryx splendens) species are depicted on the stamps and miniature sheet. All these species are found in Ireland. You may click here to know more about the dragonflies and damselflies of Ireland.

On Topic of Genetics

Genetics is an important knowledge in many fields - medicine, agriculture, biotechnology, evolution etc. I particularly have immense interest in genetics because my first degree was in Genetics. Well, there is one set of stamps from Sweden which has impressed me very much. The stamp set containing four stamps was issued on November 24, 1989 to commemorate the Nobel Prize winners in the category Physiology or Medicine (Genetics). Four important discoveries on genetics were depicted in the stamps.

The first stamp shows the discovery of the role of chromosomes in heredity. Thomas Hunt Morgan used the fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster) to demonstrate how the chromosome crossing over gives raise to the ratios 3:1 and 9:3:3:1 in phenotypes. He received Nobel Prize in 1933.

The second stamp depict the discovery of DNA structure - the double helix - by James Dewey Watson, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins in 1953. The breakthrough was actually based on the X-ray image of the nucleic acids and chemical composition of the four bases in a nucleic acid solution. The discovery of the double helix had indeed shocked the world in 1950s. Three of them received Nobel Prize in 1962.

The third stamp on the discovery of restriction enzymes by three microbiologists namely Werner Arber, Daniel Nathans and Hamilton Othanel Smith. Restriction enzymes are only found in bacteria. The bacteria use restriction enzymes for self defense from invasion of viruses by cutting the DNA of viruses into pieces. The restriction enzymes are then used by molecular biologists to cut (as a pair biological scissor) DNA into desired fragments for DNA manipulation (biotechnology). Three of them received Nobel Prize in 1978.

Finally, the forth stamp is on the discovery of jumping gene by a cytogeneticist Barbara McClintock. Barbara McClintock studied maize/corn, and she discovery certain genes could be moved around the genome of maize/corn. These movable element is called as transposable element or jumping gene. She received Nobel Prize in 1983.

These stamps are beautifully printed by recess printing. I just love them.

Happy Malaysia Day

September 16, 2009

Today of 46 years ago a nation named MALAYSIA was born. The newly formed Malaysia nation consisted of the Federal of Malaya, Sarawak, Sabah and Singapore. On this very important event, the postal authority of Malaysia released a set of three stamps on September 16, 1963 to commemorate the formation of Malaysia. For the very first time the word "MALAYSIA" appeared on the stamps! Since then, all the stamps issued by postal authority of Malaysia bear the country inscription MALAYSIA. For Singapore, these Malaysian stamps were used until 1965 when Singapore was separated from Malaysia to become an independent country.

For better and for worse, Malaysia has experienced 46 years of nation building which has brought back many sweet and sour memories to the people of Malaysia. Anyway, I wish all Malaysians a very happy Malaysia Day!

Pitcher Plant Stamps of Malaysia

Pitcher plants scientifically known as Nepenthes are one of the most spectacular plant species on earth. The centre of diversity of Nepenthes is in Borneo Island housing 36 species. Malaysia postal authority has on a few occasions released stamps showing images of Nepenthes. So far, four Nepenthes species have been depicted on stamps of Malaysia, i.e. N. sanguinea, N. macfarlanei, N. rajah and N. lowii. N. sanguinea has wider distribution in Peninsular Malaysia while N. macfarlanei is found from Kelantan to Selangor. On the other hand, both N. rajah and N. lowii are endemic to Borneo.

On April 6, 1996, postal authority of Malaysia released a set of four stamps on topic of pitcher plants. Four pitcher plant species were depicted on the stamps, i.e. N. sanguinea, N. macfarlanei, N. rajah and N. lowii. The stamps were printed in format of setenat pair.

On April 26, 2006, postal authority of Malaysia released a set of four stamps on topic of mountains of Malaysia. One of the stamps depicting Mt. Ledang has an image of pitcher plant. The pitcher plant species on the stamp is N. sanguinea. The most conspicious pitcher plant species at Mt. Ledang is N. sanguinea, and this information is well presented on the stamp.
