The Malaysian Philatelist 2010/2

The Malaysian Philatelist 2010/2 has finally come out. I congratulate Philatelic Society of Malaysia on successfully managing this fine journal. In this issue (2010/2) of the journal, I put up a write-up on 2005 bird definitives. The write-up is an update on gum/watermark varieties and serial number of an earlier one published in the same journal (issue 2010/1). Let me know if you are interested in the article, and I could send you a soft copy. The previous article on the 2005 bird definitives will also be provided upon request.

Actually, I wanted to write something about the 2010 Garden Flower National Definitives for the issue 2010/2. However, I was so occupied in October and November that I had to put off my intention. Well, the last two months have been a busy period for varieties/serial number for these Garden Flower National Definitives, and it is actually worth to wait a bit longer to write something more interesting about these national definitives, I guess. I will try my best to contribute an article on these national definitives in the next issue of The Malaysian Philatelist, hopefully.

Shangri-La

Shangri-La is a mystical place stated in James Hilton's (1933) Lost Horizon. It is an earthly paradise of happy land isolated from outside world. Where is exactly Shangri-La? It is still remained mysterious. However, the below postmark is from Shangri-La! I wish I would visit Shangri-La one day...................

2010 - Traditional Games with Upin and Ipin

Pos Malaysia released a stamp issue on December 13, 2010 containing six stamps and a miniature sheet. These stamps and miniature sheet are of self-adhesive stickers. I only managed to obtain the stamps and miniature sheet today due to my very busy schedule the last three weeks. This is the very first time for Pos Malaysia to issue self-adhesive stamps. The stamps and miniature sheet aslo contain fluorescent mark (can be visualized under uv light), and the flourescent mark is of songket pattern (similar to that used in Current stamps released on January 18, 2010). The perforation of the adhesive stamps is not in die-cut form, but the miniature sheet has die-cut perforation. In other words, one has to tear off the adhesive stamps from the stamp sheet (to separate them individually) before they are used as postage.

Investment

I don't know why sometime I feel stupid of buying many stamps (Malaysia new stamp issues). I have been doing this for at least the past 10 years. I know that these common recent stamps actually worth nothing. However, I always hope that they would worth something in 20 years to come. I think I am a bit dumb when comes to bussiness and investment........ Maybe starting from next year I should re-strategize myself when comes to buying new stamps......

USA - Stamps of Rain Forest

I received this mini sheet from a friend living in Indiana. I quite like this USA mini sheet because it portrays tropical rain forest. These stamps were issued on September 1, 2010. I see a damselfly in the mini sheet!!!!!

2010 - 1-Malaysia Collection Series II - Technology

Pos Malaysia released a set of four stamps on November 10, 2010 on topic of 1-Malaysia. This is the second series of 1-Malaysi stamp issue. You may click here to see the first series of 1-Malaysia stamps (issued on August 31, 2009). In this series of 1-Malaysia stamp issue, the theme Technology is employed. At the same time, a set of five postcards were issued. Four of these postcards form a vertical composition of 1-Malaysia logo. The fifth postcard portrays the image of four postage stamps of this issue. The back of the postcards are pre-printed with a 20s stamp (1-Malaysia logo). Nevertheless, there are two errors in the postcards. The decriptions/illustrations at the back of two postcards are swaped. These two postcards are songket weaver multimedia magic and basket of bio wealth.

Article for The Malaysian Philatelist

I have just submitted an article to The Malaysian Philatlist to be published for the coming issue of the journal. The Malaysian Philatelist is the official journal of Philatelic Society of Malaysia (PSM). The quality of the journal is getting better for the past few issues.

The article entitled "2005 Bird Definitives - An Update" is a follow-up article on the article (2005 Bird Definitives - Five Years on) that I published in the last issue of The Malaysian Philatelist. This article is about the serial number, watermark variety, gum variety and flourescent mark of the bird definitive reprints. For those serious collectors, this article should be of much useful. The next issue of The Malaysian Philatelist will be out by the end of this year, hopefully.

Train MS - Watermark Varieties

The original print and the overprint (Bangkok 2010) of the train miniature sheet have two types of watermark - SPM upright and SPM inverted. For the original print miniature sheet, the upright watermark is less common. On the other hand, the inverted watermark is less common for the overprint miniature sheet. Have you got all the watermark varieties?

National Mail Centre, Shah Alam

Mail sorting in Peninsular Malaysia is going through some changes. A new mail centre has been built in Shah Alam known as National Mail Centre (NMC), Shah Alam. This new NMC Shah Alam has replaced the old Bukit Raja Mail Centre. In the near future the Kuala Lumpur Mail Centre, B.B.Bangi Mail Centre and Seremban Mail Centre will be closed down, and all the mail processed by these mail centres will be sent to NMC Shah Alam. NMC Shah Alam adopts "ink-jet" method for cancellation.

Below is a cover processed by NMC Shah Alam using 1-Malaysia slogan postmark. There is a red ink (inflourescent) marking at the bottom of the cover. This red marking consists of a barcode and a six-digit date. This red (inflourescent) marking is essential for sorting mail using light scanning method.

date: October 19, 2010

Recently, NMC Shah Alam employed a new slogan postmark on its cancellation (see images below). The slogan postmark carries a message asking public to register as organ donor.
